Privacy

Fontsight doesn’t collect, transmit or sell any data.

What it reads

Fontsight reads a web page only when you ask it to: when you press the shortcut, click its toolbar icon or choose “Identify this font” from the right-click menu. It reads the page’s styles and fonts on your device and shows you what it found. Nothing about the page leaves your browser.

What it keeps

Anything you save, such as the fonts you’ve saved, your settings and an optional tally of family names, is stored by your browser on your device. You can erase all of it in Settings → Erase everything.

What it sends

Fontsight makes no network requests of its own. It reaches Google Fonts only when you ask it to: clicking “Load every style” in the type tester, clicking a Google Fonts family in Swap, or turning on “Preview Google Fonts” in Swap. That last one is off until you choose it. When it’s on, Swap’s tiles fetch only the few letters they show from Google, and a Google family loads when you rest the pointer on it. You can turn it off in Settings. Font files you drop into Swap are read on your device and never uploaded.

When you pin text, and when you open “Axes & features” in Swap, Fontsight reads the font file the page has already loaded, usually straight from your browser’s cache, to name the font and list what it can do. It reads it on your device and sends nothing anywhere.

Free look-alikes are found on your device, against an index of measurements that ships inside Fontsight. Nothing is looked up online. Trying a look-alike from Google Fonts, Fontshare or an open-source library loads it from there, only when you choose it, as with Google Fonts above.

This website

fontsight.xyz counts visits with Cloudflare Web Analytics. It sets no cookies, stores nothing in your browser and doesn’t follow you to other sites. It sees which page you opened, the site that sent you, your browser and your country, and how fast the page loaded. Nothing else on the site tracks you, and the extension has no analytics at all.

The site’s fonts and other scripts are served from this site, with one exception: on the free-alternative pages, fonts from Fontshare are shown from Fontshare’s own servers.
